Hewlett-Packard
"In one key area of the manufacturing process, working with our key contract manufacturers,
distributors, and the [VAR] operations responsible for our Unix servers, we took a process from
days to minutes. That's huge," said Pete Karolczak, vice president and chief information officer at
HP, Palo Alto, Calif.
Crista Souza, EDTN Network
Electronic Buyers' News, Oct. 13, 2000
Hewlett-Packard Company today reported that its implementation of RosettaNet Partner Interface
Processes (PIPs) has transformed HP's B2B processes throughout its supply chain for HP
workstations, HP NetServers and Unix® servers. The RosettaNet PIPs have resulted in significant
time savings and a smoother information flow for HP and its Value-Added Resellers (VARs),
distributors and contract manufacturers.
All three RosettaNet PIPs HP is currently using -- PIP3A4, which acknowledges receipt of a
purchase order; PIP3A6, which provides order status; and a pre-release version of PIP3B2, which
sends advance shipment and shipper's manifest notifications -- have reduced processing time for HP
and North American VARs and distributors from days to minutes. At the other end of the supply
chain, the same PIPs are being exchanged between HP and North American contract manufacturers,
resulting in similar time savings.
"Today, it's all about speed -- the speed at which we introduce business models and introduce
business partners into those models," said Pete Karolczak, vice president and chief information
officer for HP's Consumer Business Organization and incoming chairman of RosettaNet's IT Board. "We
can either try to keep up with the Internet by using one-off process interfaces with our business
partners, or we can invest in accelerating the adoption of standards that will get us there faster.
HP has opted for RosettaNet, and we're very serious about bringing the benefits of these standards
to our supply chain partners."

Toshiba America Information Systems
"Until now, true electronic commerce (EC) was a holy grail. It was something that the PC
industry wanted, but could not fully implement without the common standards necessary to make EC
truly functional and reliable throughout a single supply chain. More significant is that it was
impossible to implement EC across the industry. RosettaNet, as the organization committed to making
EC a reality, brings together a strong alliance of industry-leading companies representing all
facets of the PC industry. These partners will work together to define, develop and implement a new
EC standard that will benefit every company in the IT supply chain through improved efficiencies
and increased productivity. Toshiba, as a managing board member, is committed both internally and
with its partner companies to drive the standardization and implementation of RosettaNet in order
to make EC a reality," said Gordon Hilton, vice president, Toshiba America Information Systems,
Inc. and RosettaNet board member.
TTI
Paul Andrews, TTI CEO and President, said, "It is dramatically more efficient and effective
to support industry standardization than to develop such relationships one on one. Not only is it
cost effective, but it also saves considerable time in developing web enabled e-commerce
relationships. By developing a common language with all the accompanying rules of grammar,
RosettaNet now enables a dialogue between multiple partners at multiple levels. This initiative is
huge, offering tremendous benefits to those who adopt the standards. These standards will enable
further automation of such transactions as purchase order placement, changing orders, expediting
and many others that will move our industry forward via efficient electronic transactions."
Andrews added, "As cycle times have collapsed to reduce time to market, asset management has
become critical to keep costs in line. RosettaNet will now enable us to control product flows more
efficiently from supplier to distributor to end customer, resulting in a much more efficient
system. This further supports the customer's requirement and our efforts to more closely manage the
procurement process without it becoming excessively labor intensive."

Xilinx
Using standard RosettaNet PIPs will help Xilinx and its partners:
- Improve sales opportunities: the time to add new products to sales catalogs decreases and the
time to prepare for promotion and sales in the supply chain can be shortened. Buyers are notified
of new product announcements in a timely manner so they can prepare for customer orders.
- Improve customer service: collaborative forecasting and planning reduces chances of stock-outs
and improves responsiveness to customer needs.
- Reduce transaction costs: web-based requisitioning of product materials will provide
significant cost and accuracy improvements over traditional manual processes.
- Improve inventory management: the sharing of production schedules and inventory levels reduces
supply uncertainty.
- Improve product cycle time: lower inventory in the distribution channel allows for the rapid
rollout of new products, with reduced price pressure on existing goods.
- Improve capacity utilization: improved insight into demand and supply across the supply chain
will allow companies to better optimize their existing assets.
