TSMC, UMC, ASE and SPIL Achieve Milestone Success for RosettaNet Manufacturing Work Order Program

Taiwan enterprises demonstrate leadership and support for global, e-business standards

For Release January 15, 2003

Taiwan

The Institute for Information Industry (III) announced that four leading semiconductor manufacturing companies, TSMC, UMC, ASE and SPIL, successfully completed the RosettaNet Manufacturing Work Order Program on December 17, 2002. During the course of this program, the four companies developed two new Partner Interface Processes (PIPs®): PIP7B5 and PIP7B6. This accomplishment is recognized as a remarkable example of Taiwan enterprises’ leadership in supporting an international e-business process standard.

Dr. Quincy Lin, Senior Vice President of TSMC, mentioned that Taiwan has developed a unique environment for semiconductor manufacturing. The involvement in helping to create international standards, such as RosettaNet, is expected to enhance Taiwan’s critical role in the supply chain, ultimately benefiting the global trading network.

"From the very beginning, semiconductor companies worldwide have been fast to adopt and implement RosettaNet, remarked Jennifer Hamilton, RosettaNet CEO. By embracing a single industry standard, Taiwan enterprises can actively lead the global trading partner community with regard to streamlining supply chain exchanges through the deployment of RosettaNet e-business processes."

Program supervisors of UMC and ASE, Mr. Hai-tang Chang and Mr. Sue-ming Shen, respectively, are pleased to see that the time-to-market request is leveraged through implementing RosettaNet standards. Via the RosettaNet Milestone Program, Manufacturing Work Order, these four companies have gained the opportunity to work together in a collaborative manner; leveraging team work to achieve a common goal. In addition, this initiative has provided a valuable model for Taiwan companies with respect to working together with members of the international community.

The RosettaNet Manufacturing Work Order Program focuses on a company’s ability to release orders to the factory floor with the supporting manufacturing process information. Through the development of work order management standards, this Program seeks to improve the accuracy of manufacturing work order, while speeding the delivery of manufacturing work orders and enabling efficient planning processes for outsourced manufacturing and build to order.

This particular e-business process is part of RosettaNet’s Manufacturing Cluster 7, and Segment 7B, referred to as Manufacturing Work Order and Work in Process (WIP). The standard enables the release, management, and exchange of factory information for two critical areas in the semiconductor supply chain -- IDM/ Fabless to foundry and IDM/ Fabless/Foundry to Test/Assembly.

Director of Department of Industrial Technology, MOEA, Mr. Jung-Chiou Hwang, expressed his pleasure of seeing that Taiwan enterprises are joining the international collaboration dynamically through government’s grants. Also, Mr. Hwang indicates that they expect to assist Taiwan domestic software developers being more and more competitive.

President of III, Mr. Ferng-chin Lin, says III will keep working with government as well as private enterprises to reinforce competitiveness by embracing industry standards and information technology.
