CompUSA Announces RosettaNet Participation

IT Industry Consortium Is Defining Global E-Commerce Standards

For Release June 9, 1999

Dallas, TX -- CompUSA Inc. (NYSE: CPU), America's Largest Computer Superstore® retailer, is pleased to announce its affiliation with RosettaNet, an Information Technology (IT) consortium created to develop a common language to standardize e-commerce business processes and terminology. RosettaNet board members include 34 leading companies that represent over half of the PC sector's $700 billion in annual revenue.

"We are proud of our participation in this important industry initiative and we are on schedule for the February 2, 2000, implementation," said RosettaNet board member, Honorio J. Padron, Senior Vice President - Process Engineering and Chief Information Officer for CompUSA Inc. "Currently, we must use different order processing transactions for each distributor and manufacturer with whom we do business, which is cumbersome and results in errors. This lack of standardization is an industry-wide problem that RosettaNet participants have addressed by creating a standard transaction set and a data dictionary to be implemented by all channel participants."

RosettaNet was launched in February of 1998 with the mission of developing and deploying open and common business process interfaces. To date, over 200 volunteers from 51 companies have assisted the RosettaNet staff in working on this project. The first phase of the project consisted of lab testing of concepts. The current phase features pre-production pilots among a variety of channel partners, including CompUSA, in preparation for the February 2, 2000 production implementation.
